Our Heart to Your Heart, from our Registered Dietitian,
Lindsey DeCaro, RD, LDN

In 1963, Congress asked the President to formally designate February as American Heart Month. Because Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death in women and men in the United States, a specific month focusing on heart disease is vital. This disease knows no racial, ethnic, age or gender boundaries and probably has impacted you or your family in some way. While efforts are constantly under way to increase education, awareness and funds for research, there are daily choices you can make to help reduce your risk.

By eating a healthier diet, you can help decrease high cholesterol, high blood pressure, an unhealthy weight, and obtain better control over your blood sugar levels.  All these steps reduce your risk factors for developing CHD.

A diet high in fat, especially saturated fat, leads to an increased risk of CHD. One key way to decrease your risk is by following a heart-healthy diet—one that’s low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. How do you accomplish this? It means selecting more whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, lean sources of protein, and heart-healthy fats—like those found in Filippo Berio Olive Oil. Olive oil has long been praised for its nutritional benefits because it contains “good” fats—lots of mono- and poly-unsaturated fatty acids. These “good” fats can boost heart health by decreasing bad cholesterol and maintaining good cholesterol. Filippo Berio -- Table Centerpiece Idea
Fill a large, clear glass vase with fresh cranberries and add water. Place long-stemmed white tulips (or white roses) in the vase.

Or, place floating candles in a large crystal bowl filled with fresh cranberries and red and white roses (stems removed).
